Our work speaks for itself

The task was to create a Penguin franchise book design of a famous couple; fiction or nonfiction. Front and back cover uses only three colors and incorporates the Penguin logo as well as a barcode. Using typography and design, I illustrate the characters relationship by creating symbols and metaphors and came up with ten adjectives for both people that represent the relationship.

SUMMARY

What happens when two people come together and create a great life—married, family, good job, but one begins to slowly make wrong decisions and is pulled into an opposite direction by an outside source, causing each other to drift apart?

RESEARCH

I started researching images that represented nobleness, and restoration, as well as compassion. With these in mind, the images I chose were broken things, an antique watch ( it holds great value and represents that some broken things can be remade for another purpose) and things that represent time.

Creating the symbols and images to represent the couples and their relationship was a little challenging. I began with a hand holding an antique clock, then decided that the front of the clock face would be cracked in half; with pieces missing (half of the numbers). I then began to add texture by adding a broken chain on the front cover and on the back cover. I then added some text to the inside of the clock with an inscription "only time will tell" when the journey will begin. For the color I chose to go with a black background since the chain and the clock stand out more and it guides the viewer’s eyes around the design.
